The Captivating Fashion of Downton Abbey

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas with your families! The new year is here, which means the last season of Downtown Abbey is coming up soon! All of us hopeless romantics will be sad to see it go. It is an era of style that has certainly captivated us:"The Crawley Effect.".

Some burning questions for the final season are: Will Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes finally make it to wedded bliss ?  Will Lady Mary catch the attention of the clever and spruce chariot  driver? What will happen with Branson in America?  How about Mr. Bates and Anna, will the criminal charges be cleared? This Sunday night is the first episode, don't miss it!

For a young woman interested in fashion in 1920 (like Lady Mary), the magazine Vogue became popular reading. It was established in the USA at the end of the 19th century. The British and French published their own editions.  They all provided coverage of French couture at a time the industry was being transformed by designers such as Coco Chanel and Madame Vionett.

The Crawley ladies have inspired a new generation of vintage lovers. Lady Mary has been able to rock some very envied outfits. Designers such as Ralph Lauren have used inspiration from Downton to create some amazing collections.

As die hard  fans, we know that each episode gives us the chance to drool over the elegant costumes.  What really is amazing about the show, is how each member of the cast develops their own signature style.

Three of the characters definitely stood out by breaking all the fashion rules of this era. Lady Mary, Lady Edith, and Lady Rose showed off their shorter hemlines and shed the white gloves too!

Lastly, who can deny the very dapper style of the Crawley gentlemen!?!   A men's day suit and formal tuxedo were the most popular wardrobe pieces of the " Edwardian" time.  A button down wingtip collared shirt, a tailcoat, and bow tie signified "high class" 1920'a style.

The clothes of 1920 brought "feel good" style, with a touch of mystery.  I have to say my favorite part of watching the series was seeing all the amazing outfits.  How about you, are you a fan of the show?  Which character's wardrobe inspired you the most?

Again, thanks  for following my blog the past year and for all the kind comments and  support.  I hope 2016 is an amazing year for you all!

xo Valerie

It has bFor a gentleFor a gentlemen who already has a modern tuxedo in his wardrobe you are 90% Downton Abbey ready. A white vest, bow tie, and gloves are the only items you probably don’t have. You may also have a pleated tuxedo shirt that should be replaced with a button down wingtip collar dress shirt instead.  With these few changes you will be in correct Downton Abbey formal dinner wear. The tuxedo has undergone some changes over the years but the changes are not significant enough for you to have to buy a new tuxedo.  Buying or renting a tailcoat is one way to step up your normal tuxedo jacket into very high class Downton Abbey men’s fashion. For those who need to rent a tuxedo – take this picture in to the rental house (I like Selixo or Jos A Bank) and do your best to match the look.men who already has a modern tuxedo in his wardrobe you are 90% Downton Abbey ready.
