Estoril, Portugal, may be known for its serene beaches and charm, but hidden inside one of its most luxurious hotels lies a secret fit for a spy. Tucked into the historic Hotel Palácio Estoril is a cozy bar with a past straight out of a James Bond novel.
I sipped tea and cocktails where double agents once mingled—and discovered espionage history that’s still alive today. What a total mind blowing experience- this is a MUST DO if you are visiting Lisbon area or Cascais!
Welcome to the Hotel Palácio: A Glamorous Retreat
First opened in 1930, Hotel Palácio Estoril has long been a haven for royalty, celebrities, and wartime exiles. Its elegant façade faces the Atlantic, steps from the Estoril Casino, and just a quick ride from Cascais. Walking through its marble lobby is like stepping into another era.
The hotel’s ties to espionage date back to World War II, when Portugal’s neutrality made Estoril a hotbed for secret agents, spies and diplomats. The Palácio became a discreet gathering place for all of them—and the hotel bar was their place to do business.
The Bar That Inspired James Bond
Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, stayed here in 1941 while working as a British Naval Intelligence officer. It’s believed that his experiences at Hotel Palácio and the Estoril Casino directly inspired the creation of Casino Royale—the first Bond novel.
Today, the Bar Estoril known as the Spy Bar, still holds up to this rich legacy. With dark wood paneling, plush seating and black-and-white photos of famous guests (including Bond actors), the atmosphere feels very nostalgic. It’s the kind of place where secrets could easily be whispered over a martini.
Afternoon Tea with a Twist
I was treated to late afternoon tea , served with an elegant Portuguese touch. A tiered tray arrived with buttery scones, mini custard tarts (pastéis de nata), finger sandwiches and petit fours. The tea menu was a range of international blends, but I chose my old favorite: English Breakfast Tea. Everything was served to perfection and was delicious!
Though afternoon tea may not have been a staple of the spy era, sipping it in this setting transported me back to the former 'spy" days.
Signature Cocktails in 007 Style
The bartenders are skilled mixologists who can whip up a Vesper Martini, Bond’s drink of choice, or recommend local favorites in Portugal. The signature Bond Drink sounded too strong for me, as it contains only alchohol. Instead I opted for a drink diluted with juice the " Pink Bond Girl."
One standout is the Estoril 1941, a signature cocktail inspired by Ian Fleming’s time at the hotel. It features gin, Madeira wine, orange zest, and a dash of bitters— just strong enough to loosen some wartime secrets ha!
Non-alcoholic options are available as well; using fresh herbs and fruit infusions, which pair nicely with lighter dishes.
A Place Where History Still Echoes
It’s not hard to imagine spies of the war sharing a quiet drink here; and eyes watching from behind newspapers. The sense of intrigue still lingers!
The staff are happy to share bits of the hotel’s history. The receptionsist Joao gave me a tour of the walls of fame in the hall. He pointed out prominent characters, actors and royalty: whose stories are forever weaved into the history of the hotel. The thrill of espionage still runs through the walls of the Palácio.

If you’re looking to add a dose of glamour and storytelling to your Portugal travels, this experience delivers. Whether you're a history lover, a Bond enthusiast, or simply a fan of elegant settings, a visit to the Spy Bar at Hotel Palácio Estoril is a must!
Sip and savor the ambieance; then imagine who once sat in your seat! At the Spy Bar, every cocktail is served with a side of mystery.
PRO TIP: Hotel Palacio is a easy train ride from Cascais. The statioin is at the city center. Upon arrival at Estoril Station; it's a short 5-7 min walk to the hotel.
If you'd rather stroll the beach promenade with gorgeous views enroute to Estoril; I highly reccomend it! However, if it's a warm day ( like the day I went) ..take the train instead. I was a bit worn out after a 45 min walk in the hot sun.
