Don’t Make This Mistake Visiting Sintra’s Castles, Portugal

Sintra, Portugal, is known for its extraordinary palaces, historic estates and fairytale-like architecture. Just outside Lisbon, this beautiful region is a must-see for anyone interested in Portuguese history, architecture and culture. Two of its most famous attractions are Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira, and after visiting both, I have some advice that could make a big difference in your experience.

My biggest recommendation? Don't try to squeeze both castles into one day. I learned firsthand just how much walking, climbing and time these two historic estates require. Each has its own character, fascinating history and lots to explore, so giving them separate days is well worth considering.

Here is what I experienced at both castles, along with my tips for visiting Sintra, Portugal, without wearing yourself out!

Visiting Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal

Pena Palace was spectacular! Its colorful exterior, striking architectural details and hilltop location make it one of the most recognizable landmarks in Portugal. Set high above Sintra, the palace offers incredible views across the surrounding valley and countryside.  Visiting here was a dream come true, I loved every minute of it!

The setting alone makes the visit worthwhile, but there is much more to appreciate than the famous exterior. The palace's architecture reflects a mix of styles, giving it a distinctive appearance that sets it apart from other historic buildings in Portugal.

One of my favorite parts of the visit was the interior courtyard, where the views of Sintra and the valley below were incredible. Take your time here, look around and enjoy the scenery. The views took my breath away!

The Best Photo Spots at Pena Palace

If you enjoy photography, Pena Palace offers some fantastic opportunities. Naturally, the colorful palace exterior is a highlight, but don't overlook the smaller architectural features.

One of my favorite photo opportunities was a little turret-like lookout along the exterior wall. You climb a few small steps to stand inside the structure, creating a wonderful spot for an iconic picture with the palace architecture surrounding you.

Be aware that reaching this photo spot requires climbing steps, so it may not be suitable for visitors with mobility limitations or difficulty walking. I recommend considering your comfort level before deciding which areas to explore.

Can You Tour the Inside of Pena Palace?

This is something visitors should check before planning their visit. On my visit, the tour I took did not include a tour of the palace interior. Access arrangements can vary depending on the ticket, tour and special events, so don't assume that booking a guided excursion automatically means you'll be exploring the rooms inside. Most tours are actually not given access inside the palace.

The exterior architecture, courtyard and sweeping views provided plenty to see and appreciate. If seeing the palace interiors is important to you, confirm exactly what your ticket or tour includes before booking.

My advice is to allow enough time to explore the areas available to you rather than rushing through the grounds to get to your next attraction.

Quinta da Regaleira: A Fascinating Historic Estate in Sintra

Quinta da Regaleira was another highlight of my time in Sintra, but the experience was quite different from visiting Pena Palace.

The estate is known for its distinctive architecture, elaborate gardens, grottoes, tunnels and intriguing features that make exploring the grounds particularly interesting. There is a sense of discovery as you move through the property, with details and hidden corners that you might otherwise miss if you simply walked around on your own.

The estate also has a fascinating history, with architectural and symbolic elements associated with its original owner, DR. António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, and its designer, Luigi Manini. The result is a place that combines architecture, landscape design and symbolism in a way that makes you want to learn more about what you are seeing.

A guided tour is definitely in order for this castle as well. Bart from EASY ESCAPE tours, made all the interesting history of this estate come to life. He told us several funny and interesting facts about Dr. Antonio and his quirky past concerning this castle and grounds.

Why I Recommend Easy Escape Tours in Sintra

I found Easy Escape Tours, based in Sintra, through Viator, and I was very happy with the experience. The owner and guide, Bart, is Portuguese-born and grew up in the area. He knows the castles and surrounding region inside out. His local knowledge made the tour more authentic and he made it a super fun time!

I also found the tour very reasonably priced, which was another plus.

I appreciated the opportunity to explore parts of the Quinta da Regaleira estate beyond the main building. Bart took us through some of the gardens, grottoes and less obvious corners of the grounds, showing us features I might easily have overlooked on my own.

For me, this is where a knowledgeable local guide really earns their place. You aren't just looking at historic architecture; you're learning about the people, stories and details that make these places significant.

If you're planning a visit to Sintra, I recommend looking up Easy Escape Tours  and checking the current tour details before booking.

Descending the Initiation Well at Quinta da Regaleira

The most EXCITING part of the Quinta da Regaleira tour was descending into the famous circular well, known as the Initiation Well.

This is one of the estate's most distinctive features, and seeing it in person was spectacular! The well descends deep into the ground, with a spiral staircase following the circular walls. It is an unusual architectural feature and one of the most memorable places I visited in Sintra.

Bart's tour also helped me appreciate the surrounding grounds, including the paths and hidden features that make the estate so interesting to explore.

Don't skip the exterior of the main building, either. The architecture is beautiful, and I recommend taking time to stop for photographs before moving on to the gardens and other features.

Quinta da Regaleira has so much more to offer than a quick look at the house. The grounds with all interesting paths, coves and caves -were the highlight of visiting this amazing historical wonder

Should You Visit Pena Palace & Quinta da Regaleira on the Same Day?

My answer is no — at least, I wouldn't recommend it if you want to experience both places properly.

Although the two attractions are both in Sintra, they each require considerable time and walking. There are hills, steps and plenty of ground to cover, and exploring historic estates is not something I enjoy rushing through just to fit another attraction into the itinerary.

Trying to see both in one day was a lot. By the time you account for getting around, walking through the grounds, stopping for photographs and taking in the history, the day becomes quite demanding.

My recommendation is to dedicate a separate day to each attraction. You'll have more time to appreciate the architecture, explore the grounds and enjoy the experience without feeling pressured to move on.

This is particularly important if you have mobility concerns or find steep hills and staircases challenging. Both attractions involve walking, and the terrain can make the visits more demanding than you might expect.

My Tips for Visiting the Castles of Sintra, Portugal

If you're planning a trip to Sintra, here are the main things I'd keep in mind:

  • Visit Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira on separate days if your itinerary allows.

  • Book a knowledgeable local guide for Quinta da Regaleira. I recommend checking out Easy Escape Tours with Bart through Viator.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes. Hills, steps and uneven paths are part of the experience.

  • Check tour inclusions before booking. Don't assume every guided tour includes access to the interior of Pena Palace.

  • Allow time for photographs. Both properties have striking architecture and beautiful views worth stopping for.

  • Consider your mobility. Some viewpoints and features require climbing steps, and the grounds involve a fair amount of walking.

Are Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira Worth Visiting?

Absolutely. Both are memorable places to visit in Portugal, but they offer different experiences. Pena Palace impressed me with its colorful architecture, hilltop location and spectacular views, while Quinta da Regaleira stood out for its fascinating grounds, hidden features and the unforgettable experience of descending into the Initiation Well.

What made both visits particularly worthwhile was learning more about the history of Sintra along the way. These aren't simply beautiful buildings to photograph; their stories help you understand the area's past and appreciate what makes it so distinctive.

My biggest takeaway is simple: don't try to see everything in Sintra in a single day. Give these two remarkable estates the time they deserve, consider a knowledgeable local guide, and plan your visit around the experience you want rather than how many attractions you can fit into your schedule.

Sintra has plenty to offer, and these two historic treasures are well worth making time for. I hope you get to explore both of these amazing castles! If you want to discover more about Portugal, check out my other itineraries to help plan your trip!
