Positano is one of those places that looks exactly like a postcard — colorful homes clinging to the cliffs, little boutiques tucked along winding streets, and endless ocean views that stop you in your tracks. Built into the cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea, this Amalfi Coast gem is as glamorous as it is relaxing.
On our girls’ trip to Italy, we spent a day exploring Positano while staying nearby in Nerano, at a small cliffside B&B with sweeping sea views. It turned out to be a very memorable day — a mix of scenic stops, pizza by the sea, and a little shopping and dessert with a view. It was SO much fun! My dream of visiting Positano finally came true!
Scenic Viewpoint Stop — and a Lemoncello Surprise
Our driver picked us up in Nerano and took us along the winding coastal road toward Positano. Buckle up tight, because you are in for one crazy ride! The twisting cliffside roads had be hiding my eyes several times ha!
Before descending into the town, we stopped at an incredible viewpoint overlooking the Amalfi Coast — one of those stops that makes you gasp a little. The sea stretched endlessly below, and the cliffs dropped steeply toward the shoreline. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE view- one of the best of my lifetime!
There was a the cutest limoncello stand at the viewpoint, and we bought refreshing lemon drinks to enjoy in the car before continuing down the hill. It was such a fun, spontaneous moment — and honestly, one of my favorite memories of the day.
Pizza by the Sea at Chez Black
Once in Positano, we headed straight for lunch at Chez Black, a long-time local favorite that sits right on the beach. We ordered pizza and ate with a full view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, watching the waves sparkle in the sunlight. I reccomend the Margharita, so yummy! The pizza-pie came out in the shape of a heart- loved it!
It was simple, delicious, and exactly what you dream of when you picture Italy — great food, warm sea air, and that Positano charm. Chez Black has a perfect mix of casual and elegant, and it’s easy to see why it’s such a classic spot.
Boutique Shopping in Positano
After lunch, we wandered through Positano’s narrow, winding streets — we walked up the twisted hillside lined with beautiful boutiques. The shops here are so wonderful and full of color: flowing linen dresses, handmade sandals, lightweight scarves, and chic resort wear that perfectly fits the Mediterranean life.
The mix of local craftsmanship and breezy Italian style is what makes Positano feel so unique. Every twistin the road brought a new view — pastel houses stacked above, bits of the sea glimmering below — took us away to another world!
Afternoon Dessert and Coffee at La Zagara
Mid-afternoon, we stopped at La Zagara, a lovely café that turned out to be one of the highlights of our day. It’s set along a curving street lined with boutiques, and from its terrace you get the most beautiful view of the colorful hillside houses Positano is known for.
We ordered coffee, wine and dessert and enjoyed the tremedous scene— the lemon trees, the sea breeze, and hill stacked with colorful homes. It was so peaceful and pretty in that moment, surrounded by all the beauty. La Zagara captures exactly what makes Positano special: relaxed, romantic, and full of character.
Soaking Up the Views
We didn’t have time to swim — and honestly, in early May the water still felt a bit too chilly for a dip — but we did sit by the sea a bit and watched the boats drift away. That’s part of the magic of Positano: even if you don’t “do” much, simply sitting and looking out at the Tyrrhenian Sea feels like an experience in itself.
If you visit in early May, it won't be too crowded yet; you can actually enjoy the views and atmosphere without rushing.
What We Loved (and Didn’t)
What we loved:
-
The drive from Nerano was breathtaking, especially the viewpoint stop with the limoncello stand.
-
Chez Black — great pizza, oceanfront tables, and that classic Positano energy.
-
The boutique shopping — chic, high-quality, and perfect for travelers who love a stylish souvenir.
-
La Zagara — beautiful desserts, coffee, and the prettiest terrace view imaginable.
-
The slower early-May pace, which made the day feel calm and relaxed.
What we didn’t love:
-
One day just wasn’t enough — it felt a bit rushed between stops.
-
The water was too cold for swimming
-
Access by car can be a bit tight, having a driver made it easier.
