One of my favorite things about traveling through Portugal is discovering places that have a story to tell. During my Lisbon trip this past May, I returned to one of those special places for the second time in two years — Livraria Bertrand, the oldest bookstore in the world.

My first visit was already a great memory, but this time I decided to take the free guided tour of the bookstore. I am so glad I did because I learned so much more about the history of this incredible Lisbon landmark and why it has become such an important part of Portuguese culture.

If you love books, history, architecture, or discovering unique places when you travel, Livraria Bertrand should definitely be added to your Lisbon itinerary.

Located in the beautiful Chiado neighborhood, Livraria Bertrand is much more than just a bookstore. It's is a piece of Lisbon's amazing history!

The bookstore was founded in the 18th century and is recognized as the oldest operating bookstore in the world. The current location in Chiado is only the second location in the bookstore’s long history, which makes visiting even more special.

Walking through the doors, you realize this is not a typical bookstore. There is a sense of history here that is hard to describe. Generations of readers, writers and visitors have walked through these same rooms. I was in total awe of this historical landmark, and wished I had many days to spend in this store!

One of the things I loved learning about during my guided tour was how each room has its own theme, highlighting Portuguese poets, writers and artists. Their books are displayed throughout the different rooms, making the experience feel like a journey through Portugal’s literary history.

Why Livraria Bertrand Is a Must-Visit Lisbon Attraction

When people think about Lisbon, they often think about the famous viewpoints, colorful streets, historic trams and amazing food. Those are all wonderful, but I also love finding the lesser-known places that help you understand the destination better.

It is the type of place where you can slow down and appreciate the history around you. Even if you are not a huge book lover, the atmosphere, beautiful rooms, and connection to Portuguese culture make it worth visiting.

Since this was my second visit, I thought I already knew what to expect. But the free tour gave me a completely different experience. The guide explained the history of the bookstore from its beginnings until today, sharing details I would have never known just by walking around on my own.

Sometimes the stories behind a place are what make it unforgettable, and that was definitely the case here.  The tour helped me appreciate Livraria Bertrand in a whole new way. Instead of just seeing shelves of books, I understood the importance of this historic bookstore and why it continues to attract visitors from around the world.

The Guinness World Record

When I walked up to the Bertrand Bookstore in Lisbon, I first noticed the Guinness World Record sign  outside the building. But the coolest detail was looking down and finding the official record recognition actually printed onto the floor.

 Knowing this place has been open since 1732 and survived the 1755 earthquake made walking over that marker and into the narrow, arched rooms feel pretty incredible. When I bought a book, the clerk stamped the inside page with their official seal proving it came from the oldest operating bookstore in the world, which made for a perfect souvenir.

Exploring Chiado After Your Visit

The bookstore is located in Chiado, one of my favorite areas of Lisbon. This neighborhood is perfect for exploring on foot, with cafés, restaurants, shops, hotels, and historic attractions all nearby.

After your visit, you can easily walk over to A Brasileira, one of Lisbon’s famous historic cafés, browse the nearby shops, or stop for a meal at one of the many restaurants in the area. ( A post on Chiado coming soon! )

If you are planning where to stay in Lisbon, Chiado is a fantastic choice. Having so many attractions within walking distance makes exploring the city much easier, especially if you enjoy taking your time and discovering places along the way.  

On this 4th trip to Lisbon, I chose a hotel stay in Chiado!  I was literally steps away from this historic bookstore...what a treat!

The free tour is the best way to learn about the bookstore’s history and appreciate all the details.

Allow time to explore Chiado.
Do not rush in and out of the bookstore. Plan time to enjoy the neighborhood too.

Livraria Bertrand is easy to include when exploring Chiado and nearby attractions.

Visit even if you are not buying books.
This is a historic Lisbon experience, not just a shopping stop.

After visiting Livraria Bertrand twice, I can honestly say it is one of the places I recommend adding to your Lisbon itinerary.

There are so many incredible places to discover in Portugal, and this historic bookstore is a perfect example of why I love exploring beyond the obvious attractions.

Whether you are a book lover, a history enthusiast, or simply someone who enjoys finding unique places while traveling, Livraria Bertrand is worth a visit.
